How to Tell if Gold Jewellery Is Real: A Quick Guide
When it comes to buying gold jewellery — especially second-hand — knowing what’s real and what’s not can save you money and stress. Whether you're sorting through a family heirloom or eyeing a vintage chain online, here are a few straightforward ways to tell if your gold is genuine.
1. Look for a Hallmark
In the UK, any gold jewellery over 1 gram should be hallmarked. These tiny stamps are usually found on the inside of a ring band, the clasp of a necklace or bracelet, or the post of an earring. Common purity marks include:
375 (9ct)
585 (14ct)
750 (18ct)
916 (22ct)
You might also see a maker’s mark or assay office symbol. If it’s hard to read or you’re unsure what you’re looking at, it’s worth getting it checked properly.
2. Do a Weight Check
Gold is heavy for its size. If something feels too light, especially compared to similar pieces you know are real, it might be a fake or hollow. This won’t confirm anything on its own, but it can be a clue.
3. Try the Magnet Test
Gold isn’t magnetic. If a piece sticks to a magnet, it likely contains other metals or is gold-plated. This isn’t a perfect test — some base metals aren’t magnetic either — but it’s a quick way to spot anything obviously off.
4. Check for Colour Consistency
Real gold has a warm, even colour. If you notice fading, patchy tones, or a different metal showing through around the edges or clasp, it could be plated. Always look closely in the spots that get the most wear.
5. Ask a Professional
If you really want to be sure, get it tested. We check every piece of second-hand gold jewellery we sell using a mix of acid testing, electronic tools, and magnification. It's the only way to be certain you're buying the real thing.
