DESCRIPTION
A wonderful and particularly rare Queen Anne Britannia-standard solid silver sugar caster by the renowned specialist caster maker Charles Adam, hallmarked in London in 1707.
This impressive early caster features an ornately pierced lid with a secure bayonet fitting. The body has an elegant period form and is beautifully decorated around the base, demonstrating the quality of early 18th-century English silversmithing.
The caster has retained a particularly pleasing colour and weighs a substantial 183 grams, equivalent to approximately 5.88 troy ounces. The hallmarks are well defined and legible, with only a small amount of rubbing to the Britannia mark. The remaining marks are particularly clear for a piece more than 300 years old.
The underside of the base bears the original owner’s engraved initials, arranged as “C” above “W*S”, adding further character and provenance to this exceptional piece of Queen Anne silverware.
CONDITION
Generally in very good condition, with surface wear and minor marks commensurate with its considerable age. There is one small dent to the base, which could potentially be restored by a professional silversmith.
The bayonet-fitting lid attaches securely to the body and has a pleasing, close fit. The pierced decoration remains attractive and well preserved.
